State police are calling the drowning of a toddler in a Scott Depot backyard pool a "terrible accident."
The 20-month-old boy from Ohio feel into the pool Monday after he snuck out the pet door of his grandparent's home, Sgt. Kevin Dickson said.
The boy was taken to Putnam General Hospital where he was revived and then taken to Charleston Area Medical Center's Women and Children Hospital, Dickson said. The boy died at the hospital, Dickson said.
The boy was staying with his grandparents because his mother was due to deliver a baby this week, Dickson said.
The boy's great-grandmother was unloading the dishwasher when the boy went into another room, Dickson said. A moment later the woman went to look for the child but could not find him anywhere in the house. She later discovered he had fallen into the pool, Dickson said.
The boy is the third West Virginia child to drown in a pool within a week. Two 28-month-old twin boys drowned Friday in Fairmont.
