He was just learning to walk, but police say the 11-month-old probably crawled through a doggy door in his grandparents' home Sunday before falling into their backyard swimming pool.
Travis died Monday at St. Mary's Medical Center after family members agreed to have him taken off life support, police said.
"He was just one of the finest little guys who ever walked," said the baby's grandfather, John Mowery. "It's unreal how sweet he was. My daughter loved him more than life itself."
Tera Vasquez, 23, fed her son about 8 a.m. Sunday and then lay back down with him inside the home at 204 Jennings Ave., said Greenacres Lt. Robert Weber. Vasquez, who lives at 531 Broward Ave., was housesitting for her parents, who were in Okeechobee.
When she woke up two hours later, he was no longer in the bed, Weber said. Vasquez searched the house and yard and found her son in the swimming pool at 9:54 a.m.
Police say the pool was in a fenced-in area. It was unclear Monday night how he managed to reach the water.
Paramedics tried to revive the baby before taking him to Wellington Regional Medical Center. He later was flown to St. Mary's Medical Center and placed on life support.
